Doll-headed portraits will once again be filling the gallery for Andrea’s fifth solo show. “Toy Babies” marks a return to a theme Andrea drew upon for her first solo show at Hot Art Wet City, while building upon the subject by adding objects used in subsequent work. It’s in the details that a continuation of the use of personal symbols can be seen, with hidden jokes and meanings, and a few surprises! These portraits of mid-century toys are created using cutout shapes to feature paintings and scratchboard illustrations. Andrea takes her inspiration in part from vintage children’s toys and books, her cultural heritage, and the memories of her childhood understandings of the world.

Andrea Hooge is an artist living and working out of her home studio in East Vancouver. She focuses mainly on figurative oil paintings and scratchboards, and while many of her works are on wood or hardboard panel, she also creates unique cutouts that move away from conventional shapes. These have been made to stand alone or to overlap and create larger and more dynamic pieces. In addition to her previous solo shows at Hot Art Wet City, Andrea has shown her work in various group shows within Vancouver. Andrea earned her BA from the University of the Fraser Valley, where she majored in Psychology and minored in Visual Arts.

Easter Eggs marks Andrea Hooge’s fourth solo show at Hot Art Wet City and features a new collection of scratchboard images. She revisits ideas explored in her previous show Menno Kitty, adding to her collection of personal symbols and objects. Andrea draws her inspiration from childhood interpretations of vintage children’s books and playthings, as well as her cultural heritage. Menno Kitty

Menno Kitty features a new and colourful group of oil paintings by Andrea Hooge created to convey a childlike air of playfulness and humour. Drawing from her childhood interpretations and understandings of the world around her, she includes images of kittens, dolls, and babies mixed in with an array of objects that act as personal symbols. These symbols hold deeper personal meaning and are ones she has gathered through her life to reflect some of these childhood understandings. See photos from the show on Flickr >

Andrea Hooge is an artist living and working out of her home studio in East Vancouver. She earned her BA from the University of the Fraser Valley, where she majored in Psychology and minored in Visual Arts. After her schooling, she sought a vocation in social work, but after several years of attempting to balance her work with her desire to create art, she changed direction. Since 2012, Andrea has been able to dedicate herself more fully to her passion for creating art. She has shown her work in various group shows in Vancouver, and has had two solo exhibitions, titled Dolly and Scratch.

Andrea often draws inspiration from the nostalgia of vintage magazines and children’s books. Much of her work has been focused mainly on figurative oil paintings and scratchboards. While many of her painted works are on wood or hardboard panel, she also creates wood and scratchboard cutouts to move away from conventional shapes. These have been made to stand alone or overlap to create larger and more dynamic pieces.

Andrea Hooge‘s doll-head portraits breathe life into inanimate objects and merging reality with fantasy. Using vibrant colours, shapes, and detailed scratchboards as a backdrop, she draws you in and encourages you to explore the connections between technique and subject. Cute yet creepy, much of the work in “Dolly” incorporates the handmade, including wood cutouts, frames, and homemade scratchboard. “Dolly” began as an experiment in painting dolls from the 50s, dolls that mimic life but are themselves lifeless. Could the same be said about the post-War modern experiment? Maybe, but we’ll leave that question for the academics. See photos of the work here >

Andrea Hooge is an artist living and working in Vancouver, BC. Often inspired by the nostalgia of vintage magazines, advertisements, and children’s books, her focus is on oil painted portraits on wood cutouts and panels, as well a scratchboards, inks and acrylics.
