Navigating the Art Industry: Professional Practices for Emerging Artists is a unique 3-hour seminar designed specifically for emerging artists preparing to approach the commercial and public art industry. It is ideal for fine artists of any media pursuing careers in the commercial Vancouver art market or those looking to expand their exhibition repertoire.
Presenter Pennylane Shen has taught full courses in Vancouver, New York and Toronto. Navigating the Art Industry is a condensed introductory session, combining theory, industry experience and practical resources for the emerging artist. She currently works at the Bau-Xi Gallery and teaches “Marketing for Fine Artists” at Langara College. In the nonprofit sector, Pennylane manages the figurative artists collective Phantoms in the Front Yard and is on the art selection committee for the annual Art for Life art auction.

The latest group show from Phantoms in the Front Yard puts writing and painting on a collision course. Each artist in the collective has pursued at least one writer, to establish together a specific selection of words – a short story, poetry, lyrics … as a point of response for original art work. The result is an exciting new collection reflecting the group’s continuing dedication to realistic and detailed rendering, as pressed through various off-kilter processes of responding deeply to other artists’ written creations.

Jeremy Todd discusses his explorations of image/text relationships and his appreciation for the context and works within the exhibition. Many of the abilities ascribed to images and text can seem mutually exclusive – the arrest of time and descriptive language versus the activation of the visual imagination and durational narrative for example – and yet their interaction can also generate a plethora of insights concerning the authority and transparency of both. Image/text interactions are common enough within our everyday lives, let alone contemporary art (consider advertising and online social media). Do these combinations perpetually influence our understanding of things? How and why do they expand beyond the limitations of their parts? What questions are brought to bear upon our senses of self, meaning and value?
Jeremy Todd is an interdisciplinary artist, teacher, writer, curator and musician concerned with the role of artists and intellectuals in society, the formation of cultural memory and technologies of the self. He is a faculty member of the Vancouver Film School Foundation Department, developing curriculum integrating art history, cultural studies and creative process. He was Director/Curator for the Helen Pitt Gallery ARC from 2003-05, and in 2007-08 acted as the interim Director/Curator of the Richmond Art Gallery. Jeremy also organizes grassroots collaborative events in Vancouver as part of his ongoing Not Sent Letters artist project (notsentlettersproject.com) while maintaining a studio practice and performing in the new music group Payday Millionaire.
Conceived by Jim Hoehnle and Chris Bentzen in 2004, Hot One Inch Action is the original, one-night only show of button art and social interaction from Vancouver, BC. The tiny art of fifty different artists is reproduced on one inch buttons. These limited edition buttons are displayed on the gallery wall and the audience is offered the opportunity to buy randomly selected buttons in mixed bags of five for $5. Didn’t get the button you want? Trade with the people around you… how bad do you want that button?! That’s when the hot action starts. “We Can Be Heroes” is a pop-culture/fan art show featuring everyone’s favourite rock star David Bowie with a twist: Bowie portrayed as a superhero! From his early days, to Ziggy Stardust, to his film appearances, Bowie already seems like a superhero… isn’t he already Starman? He’s a man that fell from the sky, he probably lived on Mars (any evidence from Curiosity rover yet?), and his wife is definitely more than human. The evidence is overwhelming!

In 1998, Joel and Ethan Coen wrote and directed the cult classic The Big Lebowski. The film features Jeff Bridges as “The Dude” as well as John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Philip Seymour Hoffman, David Huddleston, Julianne Moore, Tara Reid, John Turturro, Sam Elliott… and don’t forget about the Nihilists. Like the Dude, well, ya, not like him at all, but anyway, Hot Art Wet City is saying “Fuck It Dude” and opening a pop-up art gallery… and FK IT DUDE is the first show!
Opening night included prizes for best costumes (including a gift certificate from Bandidas Taqueria, a bowling package from Grandview Lanes, and a DVD copy of The Big Lebowski). “Hey, this art really ties the room together.”
